Three fundamental issues in the construction industry
So what are the problems facing the construction industry now? I think there are three fundamental issues that need to be addressed: firstly, the problem of high energy consumption in buildings, secondly, the problem of short lifespan of buildings, thirdly, the problem of low efficiency and high cost in the construction process, and low level of commercialization is one of the reasons for high costs.
The consumption of concrete in China in the three years before the epidemic was 1.5 times the total consumption of the United States in the past 100 years. In 2017, China's annual cement production was 1.4 times that of other countries in the world combined. In terms of volume, China's construction industry has indeed experienced a period of high light.
Buildings have a short lifespan, with more being built and demolished. In 2020, the amount of construction waste in China reached 3 billion tons, equivalent to 30% to 40% of the national urban waste, and the resource utilization rate of construction waste in China is still very low, only 5%.
Another issue can be seen in Tokyo's experience. In 2010, buildings accounted for 53% of Tokyo's carbon dioxide emissions, the transportation sector accounted for 33.7%, and the industrial sector accounted for 10.9%. Tokyo is a city that has done well in energy conservation and emission reduction. Through 10 years of effort, the carbon emissions of the transportation and industrial sectors have been compressed to 16.5% and 7.2% respectively by 2021, while the proportion of buildings has increased to 73%. As a major energy consumption center, buildings have made slow progress in energy conservation and emission reduction.
